As of the end of September, China's primary aluminium capacity in operation was 38.16 million tonnes among the existing capacity of 43.28 million tonnes. The production capacity in operation was up by 15.05 per cent month-on-month from 37.62 million tonnes, while operating rates were down from 88.6 per cent to 88.2 per cent.

However, the daily average primary aluminium output rose by 800 tonnes from 103,000 tonnes in August to 103,800 tonnes in September, attributing to the new capacities coming online in Yunnan and Inner Mongolia.

During the first nine months of 2020, China’s primary aluminium production increased by 3.68 per cent year-on-year to27.43 million tonnes, while consumption rose by 4.81 per cent to 28.15 million tonnes. Social inventories of primary aluminium shrank 165,000 tonnes due to improved demand.

SMM expects China’s primary aluminium output in October to stand at 3.24 million tonnes, surging 8.18 per cent year-on-year and 1.57 per cent month-on-month, as production at Yunnan and Inner Mongolia smelters is likely to rise further.
